Last night Steve and I curled up in bed to watch a movie on the laptop. A few minutes into the flick I needed to use the washroom where I realized that there was some bloody show. Immediately following this discovery I started to feel kind of mildly crampy. I didn’t think too much of it, but within an hour those cramps had become more intense and were coming every five minutes. After four hours of intensifying contractions and continued bloody show, we went to the hospital. They hooked me up to the monitor and we saw that the baby was doing well and my contractions were getting stronger and continuing to come at regular intervals. The nurse did an internal exam and declared that I was still only one cm dilated and that the cervix was still in the posterior position. She welcomed us to stay at the hospital but also said we were free to go home and get some sleep since it could still be quite a while until things fully progressed. We opted to go home. Steve managed to catch a few winks but my contractions were to painfull to allow me to get some sleep. At five am I prodded Steve and told him that we needed to go back to the hostpital. Once we got settled into the birthing room the nurses offered me a shot of morphine mixed with gravol to help me sleep. I was hesitant to take drugs so eary in labour but was already exhausted and knew that I needed my sleep more than I needed my pride. I dozed, off and on, for a few hours and felt much better after I woke up. The contractions had slowed and I had progressed 3 centimeters. The nurses were very kind and again told us we were welcome to stay at the hostpital if we wanted but realistically I still had a long journey ahead and would be more comfortable at home. Once again we loaded up our gear and I gingerly trodded, between contrations, to the car. We have been at home ever since.
To sum up, the past 24 hours have been filled with a lot of pain with minimal progression. Steve is actually typing this as I dictate to him between my contrations. He has been a great support, offering many a back rub and encouraging words.
My new motto:
"Birth plan, schmirth plan.
Bring on the epidural."

So what made you think this was a walk in the park? This is bringing new life into the world!! A miracle! Why would you think it is any less than the hardest work you have ever done??!! This work lasts a life time.
Labour and birth is but a right of passage – yours into the world of parents and your daughter into the world of being your daughter.
How ever it was long, rough, tough for you – it was equally long, rough and tough for her. Please acknowlege that for her and for you as the parents. This is all her memory too!
Babies have life long memories of being born too!
Congratulations!!! She is adorable, all that hair!!! You did it!!!
Congratulations on your baby girl!!! I have enjoyed reading your blag for quite some time now. You seem like very fun, easy going people, and will surely be great, great parents. All the best to you three!!
