My Girl

The Water Is Wide

“The water is wide I cannot cross o’er

And neither have I the wings to fly

Build me a boat that can carry two

And both shall row, my love and I”

My favourite time of the day is when I am cradling Avelyn in my arms, gliding smoothly in the rocking chair while she drinks her bottle. As she swallows he eyelids grow heavy and she begins to surrender to sleep and I sing her the same songs each time she drifts off.

I was thinking of how strange it is that Avelyn will have little recollection of those hours spent rocking with me but they will be ones that I will never forget. The time is passing far too quickly; my baby is six months old tomorrow and before I know it she’ll be sixteen. Every older woman I pass on the street corner who pauses to steal a glance at Avelyn in the stroller shakes her head and says, “It goes by too fast,” and I can see in her eyes that she is remembering when she was the proud new mother prancing down the road but now her babies are all grown up .

“A ship there is that sails the seas

She’s loaded deep, as deep can be

But not as deep as the love I’m in

Though I know not how I sink or swim”

  • Precious precious, both picture and comments Amanda. lv u al

  • It’s so true. I think about that often. All these things I do with Abby and she won’t ever remember them, but they are so important to me.

That is an absolutely precious picture of my sweetie. :)

  • Ack. I’m crying. Must be PMS.

  • You’re such a great Mommy. And it does go way too fast…

  • I love that song!
When Meagan was a miserable colicky babe I would rock her for hrs. & sing her songs & bemoan to my Momma about lost sleep. She would tell me it was bonding time so that when Megs was 16 & possibly giving me grief I would have these bonding memories to carry me through. The teen grief never happened, & I still cherish all those memories of holding her for hrs.- yes, the yrs. they do fly by!
What a precious gem is Avelyn!

  • My Mommy used to sing that one to me, andI sing it to Hunter, too!

  • She’s adorable!

  • She’s really starting to take on her own facial features isn’t she? I’m looking forward to seeing the both of you in just a little over a week.

  • Cute, cute, cute! Enjoy your time together :)

  • beautiful baby! Didn’t it seem like Six Months Old was so far away and the clothes look huge? Now we’re here and they’ll be one before we know it – ack!

  • I would swim over the deepest ocean,
    For my love to find
But the sea is wide and I cannot cross over
And neither have I the wings to fly
I wish I could meet a handsome boatsman
To ferry me over, to my love and die

Your Lyrics bring to mind the above , a beautiful Irish song called Carrickfergus. I love the version sang by Brian Kennedy , makes me cry every time
