My Girl, My Girl 2.0

Double Trouble

In the past week I have tried a few times to take a nausea-induced rest upstairs while the girls play quietly, with somewhat limited success.

The first time, I heard them laughing together and initially thought this was a good sign. Then I got the sinking feeling I should check on what they were up to. Lo and behold, they had dumped out an entire box of Rice Krispies all over the couch and floor and were jumping on them, pulverizing them into a fine dust, while they cackled with laughter.

The next time, Karenna came toddling up to my bed, her face covered in chocolate. Turns out Avelyn had found some old pudding in the fridge and had helped herself and her sister to a cocoa delight, meanwhile smearing it on their clothes, the floor, and the dog.

I think it’s clear these two cannot be left unattended.

(Oh, and here she got into my lipstick when I turned my back for 3.2 seconds.)

(This was on a separate occasion when we were hosting a little play-date and thought the girls were upstairs playing nicely. Turns out they hit the Lotion Jackpot and were covering their entire bodies with Vaseline Intensive Care.)

  • Avelyn looks so proud in that photo! I read this somewhere and used it a couple of times in the early months of this pregnancy – when you need 5-10 minutes rest. Strip down to your undies, lay on the floor and give the kids some washable markers and tell them to decorate you. M thought it was hysterical and it kept her occupied for about 10-15 min and while it felt odd at first, I got to lay down and close my eyes for 15 min. Of course, do this shortly before bathtime so you can wash yourself and the kid (because they will draw on themselves, too). And lay on an old blanket or beach towel to protect your floor. Desperate times call for desperate measures!

  • Brings to mind the great Penaten butt cream fiasco of 1984, wherein 18 month old Amanda took advantage of a brief lull in my attentiveness as the lone caregiver for the afternoon. Within seconds, you managed to slop and/or eat the entire contents of the economy sized pack, prompting the never-to-be-forgotten phone call to Poison Control by your doting mother. Turns out Penaten is harmful to toddlers only when doses exceed five pounds.

  • Oh no! Not the new bikini!!:)

  • OK, seriously? I LOVE that picture of Avelyn with the lipstick. Awesome.

  • Oh no. You can NEVER leave them unattended for very long, especially if they’re quiet!

    Good luck!

  • Awesome.

  • The couch is my best friend.

I have learned to nap with 2 bouncing children on top of me…seriously. It takes a lot of practice, but you get use to it eventually.

  • Oh they are darling! It’s hard when you’re dealing with the early pregnancy months and you have other young ones to try and deal with.

I hope this tiring time seems to pass by very quickly.

  • I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL! Karenna IS a little girl now, and I am definitely doing makeovers with Avelyn…it would appear I didn’t outgrow that interest – thanks to your mom for lovely afternoons with her old makeup.

  • Oh boy! I remember when I had 3 who were 3 and under. My husband was deployed for nearly a year and I was 2,000 miles away from friends and family. They would not sleep! I strapped them into carseats lined up on the living room floor and played a movie for them while I napped behind them on the couch. Good times!

I remember Vaseline (not lotion, the petroleum jelly!) smeared into the carpet, lipstick incidents, cutting hair in the closet, 4 year olds carrying a whole watermelon down the carpeted hallyway, and many more fun times.

Yeah, have fun Amanda. Be creative and you’ll get just enough rest to keep yourself going.

  • It’s never too early to begin to take care of your skin!

  • Thanks for this post, it brought back so many great memories, lol. I remember feeling like an awful parent while my two and then three were getting into all kinds of messes while I pregnant napped, but then a mom I greatly admire shared with me the time her kids made a ‘cake’ under the kitchen table while she was resting. It happens to the best of us, and all you can do is laugh! ;)

  • Rhi totally stole my comment, but I was going to say at least the girls are moisturized! Haa!
