"That’s it. I’m done. I can’t DO this!" I sobbed and ran out of the bathroom then threw myself on our bed.
Steve came after me, half of his hair long, the other half short. "So, you’re not going to finish my haircut?"
"NO! I am a failure. I can’t do it!" I cried as I pulled the duvet over my head and cocooned myself in the covers of shame.
"So…you’re just going to quit halfway through? I can’t really be seen in public like this, Amanda. C’mon. Just finish up, okay?" he reasoned.
My muffled sobs endured for a few moments, then I lifted my puffy-eyed head out from the blankets, sulked back to the bathroom, took hold of the clippers and finished Steve’s haircut, all the while choking on my tears.
This is what the first two years of our marriage held. I dreaded giving Steve his monthly haircut and would beg him to just go to a real barber. He refused, since the ten dollars could be spent on much more worthwhile things, like beef jerky. I never could figure out how to make a smooth transition when clipping his hair, and then when I’d try to feather out the zones of hair I would make a mess that would gradually creep up his head until the whole things was botched. I felt like an incompetent fool. Then I would cry. That always helps, doesn’t it?
After four years of wedded bliss I have finally gotten the hang of those blasted clippers and now confidently buzz Steve’s noggin.
Just a little waltz down memory lane for you all as your weekends commence.
Have a good one, eh?

Ah, the haircut drama…we’ve been there too :)
See you Sunday!
My husband gets me to cut his hair, too. It just gets a straight shave with the dog clippers so it doesn’t take much talent on my part. Plus, its how I justify my more expensive hair cuts.
OMG – that was ME!!!!
14 years I finally talked him into getting it done by someone else. He begrudgingly agreed – but sadly he only “finds the time” to get in there and get a haircut every 3 months or so. (And he tells them to go really short… this buys him more time before he has to go back!). LOL.
Men.
Travis used to make me do that too, and the worst part is that he has bone straight hair that shows ALL my mistakes. Fortunately, my sister became a hair dresser and moved close by so she usually fixes that problem for him. But have you seen him lately?…. I just might have to cave and go oil up the clippers.
I would never have known Steve didn’t frequent “House of Hair”; his cuts always look professional. Wanna trim up my bangs?
I have started cutting Eric’s hair since moving to Korea. Everytime I start, I can never figure out how I did it the last time. Oh and like you said, how to transition from clippers to scissors. SO there is hope that it will get easier. My mom and his mom have always cut the whole family’s hair, and they do it with such ease. It takes me so long! Well, I will keep going, cause the other option is going to a barber that speaks Korean and then who knows what Eric’s hair would look like. And because of that, Eric has had to learn how to cut my hair also so all is fair!
I can’t imagine Mark trusting me with scissors near his head. Perhaps it has something to do with my clumsiness, but you should see him squirm when I use an eyelash curler.
I’m so impressed that you can cut hair. I tried cutting my own bangs years ago and have never brought a pair of scissors near my head since.
My husband is exactly the same and I still cut his hair even though he is now suppossed to be a “professional”. I am pretty good at the front, but horrible with the back (which is really too bad because he can’t see that part so he think I do a great job.) When we lived in Edmonton it took me about three months to convince him to go to a slong. He finaly agreed to go to a really cheap place so it wouldn’t cost so much and the stylist did it even worse than I cut it. It was totally lopsided in the front and when he walked out into the lobby I could tell that every person waiting (and there was a lot) was second guessing whether they should get their hair but that day or not. GRRRR boys!
Okay, I have no idea why I decided that a slong was a salon but hey I’m tired this morning. :)
Oh Amanda…
I can just see it playing out in my mind’s eye. The torture that man puts you through just to save a few bucks. ;)
I’m happy Craig won’t let me touch his hair…other than doing some trimming around the nape of his neck in between cuts. I just send him to the “modern barber” across the street and he loves it.
Fun to see you on Marc & Kylie’s blog…they not only know Shelley, but Marc is my brother! So many blog-connections. :)
This is a great story! I hate cuting my husband’s hair but he insist as well! I think the $10.00 is totally worth the price of a drama free hair cut but apparently he likes the whinning & crying that sometimes goes along with it!!
Oh that’s so us. I resist and resist. It’s worse that he’s been losing his hair now, so his argument of saving money actually makes sense… I’m slowing getting better!
