When Steve and I were first married we lived in a little apartment in Kamloops, where we both attended university. I look back on our year there as one filled with love and laughter and freedom. All we did was go to school, come home and eat dinner, and that other thing that newlyweds do a lot of. It was great. We drove a scooter to and from school everyday and must have looked a lot like Lloyd and Harry from Dumb and Dumber. Steve usually drove and set his ginormous backpack at his feet and I sat behind him, arms tight around his waist, with a pack on my back as well, as we cruised to class. Our apartment was at the top of a very long hill so our morning trip to school was speedy and we felt like we’d been shot out of a cannon, the wind whipping through our hair. The trek home took much longer, mind you. We were lucky if we could reach 40 kilmometres an hour while inching up the hill so we had to drive snug to the sidewalk and endure the funny looks of the cars passing us by. Gas for our scooter was $2 per fill. We were willing to look like nerds so we could save a few bucks. At university I would have to carry my full-face helmet around with me and people would stop and say, "Sweet! You’ve got a motorcyle?"
"Kinda."
Then I’d tell them it was actually just a scooter and that I and my husband ride it together. Most of the time the person would say, "Oh, you’re that couple! I’ve seen you crawling up the hill on that thing!"
We were famous. And deservedly so.
I am so thankful that Steve and I will have had nearly four years of marriage before the baby comes. It’s been so wonderful to have such great memories to look back on, a strong foundation of communication and conflict resolution (I’m right, he’s wrong, deal with it).

I love picturing you guys on the scooter. … i want one …
Which one of you was Harry and which one was Lloyd? Honestly I see you Amanda as the Lloyd type.
Based on looks alone I have always thought I was more of a Harry. Blonde, bumbling and softer around the edges than Lloyd. And Steve is tall and lanky and dark like Lloyd. He even has a really small little chip in his tooth, so sometimes (much to his dismay) I do call him Lloyd!
Any couple that has such fun and fond memories is going to have a good time being parents.
The scooter will be replaced with something else that fits all three of you.
For us, it is the jogging stroller.
Have fun, this part of the journey is so great.
I think that is just so cool!
:)
That scooter story is so cute. You will have so many stories your baby will try to keep her friends from finding out about:)
Awww… I remember that year. Your little place was so cute.
I think you should get another scooter, with a sidecar for Anneliese :)
