My Girl

Like a Weed

Ten pounds, twelve ounces.  Go, baby, go!
All went well at Avelyn’s eight week check up today.  The doctor is pleased with her growth and her content nature, as well as all of her reflexes and developmental milestones thus far.
The one thing she noted was that the right side of Avelyn’s head is looking a tad flat.  She suggested that I do some gentle stretches to lengthen her neck muscles and to try to vary her positions when she’s lying down to get her looking in the opposite direction than the one she presently favours.  No biggie. My baby is healthy, happy, and a bit of flatheaditis is nothing to worry about, right?
Then why, oh WHY did I bother typing "flat baby head" in the google search bar?  Haven’t I learned my lesson by now that internet research tends to be destructive and frightening and rarely reliable?  Apparently not.
All I keep seeing in my mind are phrases like, "a special helmet may be required" and "sometimes the growth of the jaw is adversely affected" and "the cranial plates may fuse together incorrectly."
Bah!
Really though, I am not overly concerned.  I will do the recommended stretches and try to put Avelyn’s toys on her left side to draw her attention in that direction.  I am sure she’ll be fine.  And if she does end up with a permanently flat head, I will love her no less.
In fact, maybe even more.

  • I still remember when the doctor said that Kynan was malnurished because he wasn’t in the proper percentage bracket for age and weight. Every baby grows and develops differently. Moms know their baby best.

  • I was so paranoid that Brooklyn had a funny shape to her head. If you don’t already, every other day lay Avelyn at the opposite end of her bed. That way she will be turned left to right alternately and her head should level out. I am sure she would be just as cute even with a flat spot.

  • You are too funny! Every baby gets some flat spot on their head at one time or another. No helmet required. ;)

  • Maybe if you firmly fixed a funnel onto her melon she would develop into a cone-head… but hey, that’s merely a suggestion.

  • That is one major drawback of the internet, it has way to much BAD info! All babies seem to get flat heads from laying on them too much, don’t worry at all!!

  • Way to go Mama!
You looked great when we saw you today. :)
Glad to hear Avelyn is chubbin’ out! So cute!

  • Your brother is funny – he must have learned from you :)

And a little flatness is common – she’s still BEAUTIFUL :)
