Farmin', Little O' This

My Eyes Are Dim, I Cannot See. Also, Please Buy Some Fruit.

Any eyeglass experts out there?  (Whoorl?  Whoorl, are you reading this?)  I need new glasses.  To my dismay, my eyesight has taken a turn for the worse in recent years and I can no longer get away with only wearing my glasses when they happen to match my outfit.  For the past few weeks I have been on the lookout for a pair of glasses that I love enough to wear every day and as of yet I’ve come up empty handed.  I don’t really know what I want.  Sometimes I’ll try on a pair of bold(ish) plastic frames and think they look good.  Then other times I prefer the rimless look.  I dunno.

I have tried wearing contacts but I am just too much of a wuss to endure the itchiness and scratchiness and ouchiness of having flakes of plastic in my eyeballs all day long.

And laser eye surgery is a leetle out of the budget at this point.  I’d rather eat dinner, thankyouverymuch.

Here’s Avelyn modeling my present pair.  They are six years old and I still, rather surprisingly, kind of like them.  They’ve got that classic, vintagey look, and I dig it.

So.  Any recommendations?  If not, that’s cool.  You can make it up to me by dropping by and buying some of our apples.  We’ve got boxes aplenty in cold storage just waiting to be eaten!  We’ve got Fugi and Pink Lady varieties (have you tried Pink Lady?  It’s new.  And awesome) and we’re selling them for, get this:  a mere 50 cents per pound.  Why so cheap, you ask?  A little thing I like to call Birthday Hail.  Remember the pounding our poor crop took on the 20th of July?  Those poor apples look like teenage acne survivors, what with all the craters and divots and scars.  Poor little pommes.  The packing house won’t accept apples that are less than perfect so it’s up to us to find a place for them.  (They might be all dinged up but I assure you that they taste just as good as those blemish-free, waxed-up apples you see at the grocery store. )

They need a loving home filled with hungry mouths to eat them so they don’t feel completely rejected.

  • Having just bought glasses yesterday, I know the dilema of finding a new pair. I prefer the thicker bolder look for frames. I ended up getting a pair from Costco that I really like and for CHEAP!

My biggest challenge was finding glasses with arms that weren’t completely hideous. I’d love the glasses and then go take a side view and see 6 rows of studded ‘diamonds’ or the word POLO stretched across the side in bold neon orange.

    Good luck with your search.

  • get both! there are a lot of stores that have “two for one” specials.

avelyn looks cute in your old frames!

  • I’d suggest taking someone who has good taste & that you trust to give you feedback(hint, hint!!) Hailey got a groovy pair last fall @ Dr. Goods & they didn’t break the bank. They’re classic but very trendy as well. Good luck.

  • I got new glasses this time last year. I hate glasses shopping. They are something you have to live with everyday. My only suggestion would be DON’T GO TO LENSCRAFTERS.

I also found that the arms of glasses are the big problem with lots of diamonds or brand names very flashy. Good luck.

  • I have such a hard time with this too. I will find a really funky pair that look great in almost everything I wear but then I’ll put on my workout clothes to go to the gym and suddenly the whole thing doesn’t match anymore.
Whoorl will have some great advice, she’s very fashion savvy and her glasses are awesome.

I can tell you that in my experience if your eye dr. sells glasses in the office it is soooo much cheaper than any of the stores. I guess there are regulations on how much they can mark up product and I think they can only make money on dispensing fee of the prescription. So I would go out and find something I like, write down the number on the arm and bring it back to the office and have them order it for me. For my prescription sunglasses it was literally half price from the lenscrafters.

  • Go bold, Amanda. Go bold.

  • Love the glasses on Avelyn! I think they are cute, but if you get a new pair…I agree – GO BOLD!!!!!! Oh, and if you ship apples to the island I’ll take some! (Poor rejects)

  • Those glasses are really cute. What do pink lady apples taste like?? Are they more tart or more sweet? I am not an apple connoiseur although I LOOOOVE apples, I always go for the fuji and never try anything else!

  • Me me, Pick ME!! Hey we’ll buy some of your apples! For SURE! If I don’t remember to corner you sometime, remind me! Or bring some to church or something. I hear you can keep a box of apples outside (covered) up to minus 10…is that true? (‘Cuz that’s where they’d be!)

  • I agree, go bold with the glasses. Your look can totally pull it off.

As far as the apples go, can you sneak some down to Seattle for me. I love Pink Lady, yum!

  • I’ve heard of people taking the frames they like and getting there prescription in them. If you like them, why not do that?

  • I took bought my glasses at Costco. They are cheap, much cheaper than anywhere else and still fabulous. I’m not so fortunate as much as I love the bolder frames I look a little too much like a mousy librarian, rather than a sexy lawyer.
I say if you love your old frames, get new lenses for now. And if not and you’re gonna buy frames take an objective friend – someone who will tell you that they look silly.

  • Good luck with the glasses hunt, I’m right there with you and just too cheap to look at this point! Happy Apple selling, I wish we lived closer!!

  • I love the glasses you have now…but I like the bold plastic frames AND the rimless ones. I have a pair of both cause I just couldn’t choose and I love to spend countless amounts of money (ok, kidding on the last part). I do like having both types though so I can wear what I’m in the mood for. If I had to choose one though, I’d go with bold plastic frames. Eyeglass shopping sucks though.

I wish I lived closer – I would buy some apples!

  • Go for both – wait it out for a “2 for 1” special. I got some great funky purple frames that were kind of a whim of a purchase but I now wear all.the.time. and get complements, too. Also, your old ones are darling, maybe just get new lenses?

I’d buy those apples if I didn’t live like 2500 miles away!

  • Like a few of your other readers, I also bought my glasses at Costco and I love them! Mine are Cynthia Rowley’s…she makes beautiful and very chic frames.

  • Oh I love Pink Lady apples! I would also buy them from you if I was closer. They are very hard to find in Saskatchewan.

  • I don’t wear glasses so I can’t be much help, but I like the ones she’s modeling!

    And apples? Mmmm.

  • I love your current glasses! A lot! Change out the lenses and keep ’em!

Also, I’d buy apples in a heartbeat if I could. Stupid distance.

  • I hate glasses shopping too. Also, do you think the contacts itchy/scratchy etc. are because you’re trying the wrong kind? Lots of places now will give you samples, of disposables, or special “breathable” ones. Sometimes they’re worth a try.

And if I lived over there I would definitely buy yummy apples.
    50 cents/pound sure fits a student budget!!

  • Oooooooo, Pink Ladies are my favorite. So tart, and crunchy, and juicy, and yummy. Do you ship to MN?

I need new glasses too, so if you find some you like, please share pictures. (I like your old glasses too!)

  • If you can wait and shop around a bit, sometimes lenscrafters or shopper’s optical will have a deal where you can get 2 frames for 1 or something like that… that way, you can get the funky bold ones AND the sleek rimless ones!!
Or, you could also get a new pair much different than the ones you already have and just replace the lenses in the ones you have…then you’ll still have two!!
We don’t eat a lotta apples in this house, my little girl is allergic! :)

  • Can you bring some apples when you come over today?

    :)

  • that pic is too cute for words

  • finally i can shed some light on this situation!! heee

I am an optician. I have loads of pairs of glasses, i wear my rimless ones 95% of the time. search for “Sillouhette” its the brand i have. They are very durable, they have no hinges so they are super superduper light and i love them. if you want to come to my office, i will give you a discount :) it will only take you about 8 hours to drive here. but, i will give you good service :) heheeee

  • I got my frames at Costco and I love them. They are vaguely Lisa Loeb-ish being thicker but given how blind I am the lenses are surprisingly light. I took a look at what shape would work with my face shape and went from there.

Do you know what shaped face you have?

  • I was going to say..go to Costco, but a few people already beat me to it. My parents both got new glasses from there recently and they are stylin’. Mom got some bold black Fendi’s and dad got classic styled Burberry’s. Prices were really good and all the frames are name brand with the exception of their own label (Kirkland).

My parents went to BC a few weeks ago and brought back a big box of apples and they were DELICIOUS!! Beat the heck out of Ontario apples (we had a terrible drought this year)that we picked this season. Wish I could buy some of yours…but we’re too far away.

  • Save me some apples please! Costco huh? Maybe we should make us a trip to KTown! Yesssssssssss!

  • Woot! for new glasses; I just got some, too. May I suggest square framed? I think they would look lovely on you, but then, I think most frames would. : ) Mine are square-ish in shape and I really like them. I’ve never worn glasses, until two weeks ago, so it’s a definite adjustment. Seeing is nice, though. I like the seeing.

  • I have no glasses advice… But I would love some apples! Can you mail them?? What to Pink Ladies taste like? Gala’s are my fav.
