Pregnancy

Let’s Gel

Yesterday I called my doctor’s office and told her how very tired I am of this overdue game.  She had me come in and we discussed induction options.

(I know that everyone has different ideas on induction.  That’s fine.  But just so you know, I seem to have developed a severe nut allergy so any comments from the peanut gallery would surely make me go into anaphylactic shock.  Do you have an epi pen ready?  And are you willing to stab it in my thigh and have the guilt of my allergic reaction hanging over your head?  Then please keep the “just wait a few more days…that baby will come when she’s ready!” remarks to yourself.  I don’t mean to sound like a grumpy old bag, but, well, that’s kind of what I am right now.)

I am penciled in to arrive at the hospital tomorrow morning and they are going to use a cervical gel to try to get the party started.  It won’t be as invasive as simply having my water broken and starting a pitocin drip.  My doctor is hoping that my body just needs a little nudge from the prostaglandin gel to get the labour going, and that’s my hope too.

So.  Today I have plans to clean the house, pack my bag, and drink a few dozen frappuccinos to toast my last day as a pregnant lady.

Here, here!

  • Woo-hoo! I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow.

  • Hi,

I just wanted to warn you that I was also induced with my first baby and I arrived at the hospital at 8:00 am and about 10:00 at night nothing had happened, so by 2:00 in the morning I gave up and went home. I’m just warning that sometimes it doesn’t work. However, the next day at 10:00 AM my contractions started and at 3:44 in the morning she finally arrived. Perfect. Healthy. Beautiful.

  • I’m sure it will work fine. I work thursday so I will get to see you afterall. Good Luck!

  • good luck, i hope everything goes well. you know how it goes though, now that you are scheduled to be induced, you will go into labor tonight!

  • That gel is AMAZING! I’m so glad that they’re doing it to you. Being overdue SUCKS, especially when all your friends had their babies two weeks early and keep telling you that you’ll go early, but you go NINE DAYS LATE. An overdue pregnant lady does NOT have patience. It just doesn’t work.

I hope you have a great day cleaning, and I hope the gel works really well tomorrow!!!! When I got it, it was administered at about 7:00 pm and by 7:00 am the next day I was in labor. Here’s hoping that tomorrow is your little girl’s birthday!

  • So exciting! Enjoy your frappucinnos!

  • Good for you on making the right decision for you. Good luck!

  • I had the gel after being 8 days overdue and it worked for me, but it took a little while; I didn’t go into labour immediately but later that day. Good luck!

  • good luck! ive been checking every few hours to see if anythign happened yet…hehe :) Im sure it will go fine :)

  • Oh my goodness, I am green with envy!

Enjoy the frappucinnos and Avelyn’s last day as the baby of the family.

Oh, and thanks for giving me something to obsess about tomorrow, just what a girl on bedrest needs ; )

  • You go girl!

I’m cheering for a speedy delivery!

  • As I told you, I went 3 days past due and those were the LONGEST 3 days of my life, so I hear you girl. Go for it!

My doc “Gently” stripped my membranes just to see if anything would come of it, 2 days past due. 10 hours later I was in labor.

A little help is all we need! Easy Labor Dust to you!

  • Good luck tomorrow and enjoy your last day of pregnant-ness

  • Yay! Here’s hoping it’s a speedy delivery! Enjoy your hospital stay! :)

  • Hurray for finally getting to hold your squishy little baby!!!
I’m one who goes overdue with my pregnancies too, so I feel your “I’m kind of a grumpy old bag right now” – ness!!! Haha!

    Here, here!

  • Induce! INDUCE!! You know how some women want a all natural birth? it’s crap! take the drugs! The way i see it, there’s nothing natural about a giant-sized child coming out of your crotch. Epidurals all the way, baby! whew hoo!!

  • WHOO HOOO for the gel! That stuff worked wonders with 2 of my 4 children (#3 and 4 of course)! After going 2 weeks over with my 2nd, I swore never again, and have not gone but a couple days past my due date since. And God bless Stadol for a little bit of relief! Good luck to you, and we’ll be waiting for details!

  • Good luck to you! Remember to realx a bit today too – maybe take a nap (or 3!)
Gives new meaning to the “she’s gellin'” line!
    :)

  • That stuff is awesome! I needed it with both of my boys! It did make me crampy but that meant progress to me!

    Let the party begin!

  • You could do the humpty dance with hubby instead… his junk has prostaglandins galore.

    Good luck!

  • You’ll do fine and as far as I’m concerned, when the mother is ready to have a baby, she’s ready, and the baby (who’s plenty big enough already) will get used to doing things when the Mom wants…

    …you may say I’m a dreamer…

Good luck with it all and may Avelyn see some charm in her baby sister!

  • While you wait, you could make some labor-inducing eggplant parmigiana: http://www.wchstv.com/gmarecipes/eggplantparmigian.shtml
No, really! It got things moving both times I was overdue (and it worked for several of my friends too).

Sending you good thoughts and prayers for a safe and speedy delivery.

  • Best of luck tomorrow! And good wishes for a safe and healthy delivery!

I’m excited to find out which name you chose.

  • My doc is starting to induce in a week and 2 days!

    Good luck! Thinking about you.

  • Good luck! I’ll be thinking of you often over the next few days. A friend shared her labour inducing trick (worked for her twice) and it worked the last time around for me. Of course i was already almost a week past the “due date”. Stupid concept by the way, let’s call it a “due month” shall we?

Anyway, here goes. Watch the movie “Chocolat” and you’ll be in labour within 24 hours. Yes, it’s French with subtitles but it has Johnny Depp and of course, lots of chocolate. Can’t hurt and it helps pass the time either way. It doesn’t work to just rent it and have it sit on the counter though, I tried that.

  • Best of luck Amanda…

I have a friend who used reflexology recently for the same purpose… The reflexologist said, “She’s in there, it’ll be about 8 hours…” and 8 hours later my friend was in labour… :)

  • Yay! That’s so exciting. I hope it’s just the nudge you need!!

And after reading this blog I am strongly regretting some of my words in my e-mail to you. ;)

  • My first pregnancy, I was all high and mighty and like – NO INDUCTION, this will happen as it is meant to.

Second pregnancy, the little bastard was still in there 10 days late and we needed to get him a passport to fly abroad in only 5 weeks time, so I was all over that induction.

Good luck! I hope yours goes as well as mine (they broke my water and he arrived 3 hours later).

  • Good luck tomorrow Amanda! You’ll be great!

  • Good luck!!! After all is said and done, the most important thing is a healthy baby. I’ll be thinking positive thoughts for you guys tomorrow! You can do it!!!

  • good luck! I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you!

  • You have to do what’s best for you. I was induced with Kynan, and way over due with Ava. I totally understand being done! Good for you for doing what you feel is best for you! Looking forward for the baby news.

  • I was going to be induced with my son, but when I got to the hospital and they hooked me up to a monitor they found out that I was having steady strong contractions. The nurses said that happens a lot. Just the thought of induction sends you into labor. Either way, good luck!

  • Having my waters broken was all it took for me (5 days overdue), no pitocin drip. From pop to baby was only about 3 1/2 hours with no other interventions needed. (let’s not talk about the 3 uncomfortable attempts of sweeping the membranes that got me nowhere before scheduling the induction). But I had been walking around at 5-7 cm for weeks before that.

Good luck! Can’t wait to see pics of baby Brow!

  • The paragraph about the peanut gallery made my day.

Here’s to Baby! My camera batteries are charged…

  • can’t wait to see this precious bundle of yours. here’s hoping you get to meet her in less than 24 hours from now…although it would be cool if she was born on september 11…mo’s b-day, you know. no, no, no. this will be a SHORT labour and delivery ;) !!!! thinkin’ of you!

  • Oh, this is SO EXCITING.

And you won’t hear any pro-Mother-Nature’s-Way comments from ME: I think it’s pretty clear the whole labor and delivery process is a BAD IDEA on her part.

  • AWESOME decision!! (See, totally the opposite of a nut.)

I’m so excited for you—and I can’t wait to see photos!

Enjoy those Fraps and have a good night’s sleep (aren’t I just hilarious??)

    Best of Luck tomorrow! Yippee!!

  • O! Best of Luck here from the NH crowd!

I’ll be sure to hit refresh 195 Billion times tomorrow.

It’s so exciting. Good luck with the pain part.
(3 C-sections, no labor over here.)

I vote epidural. But that’s just me.

  • Bring on the labour! So glad you did what’s right for YOU! Everybody else can butt out! :-) Happy Baby day tomorrow!?!?!?

  • Woo Hoo! So exciting! Hope everything goes well and you have a little baby girl in your arms tomorrow!!!

  • Good for you and good luck. You have way more patience than me.

  • Hurray for baby!!
Can’t wait to “hear” all about it! Sending you happy thoughts!

  • I will have to keep finding internet access on my vacation to check for the big arrival. I can’t wait Amanda!!!! Middle finger to anyone who bags on you for getting the party started. They have obviously had perfectly comfortable pregnancies or no babies at all…I am all about doing whatever it takes! You can do it….push that baby out of a spot that a tampon fits snuggly in! I still marvel at the miracle of skin and it’s ability to stretch…miracle!!! Loving and thinking of you.

  • Good luck tomorrow! I’m sure we will all be checking your page every other minute. Be sure to pace yourself, you are birthing a human. Enjoy this moment!

  • I so would NEVER say “just wait a few more days” … I went into preterm labor but I was READY to get her out…and she came 7 weeks early. So being overdue must really be miserable…so good for you for doing something about it!!

  • I’m so excited for you! Can’t wait to hear how it all went!

  • Thinking of you!

  • Wheee! So exciting. Can’t wait to hear the big news!!

  • Best of luck Amanda. And good for you for putting your foot down and doing what’s right for you. Sometimes it’s hard to stand up for yourself amidst all the well meaning people and their equally well meaning advice but in the end it’s you that has to live with whatever decision you either make or don’t make. Hurray for your bravery!!! Looking forward to your next post and hopefully some pictures of your beautiful baby.
